Royal Visit to La Lande Vineries
Royal Visit to La Lande Vineries

This image is also copyright to Corbet Family Channel Island Collection (CFCIC).

The photo was taken on 11th July 1921 at La Lande Vineries. Left to right are:

Henry Bichard (married Julia Louise Corbet 1887)
HM The King
HM The Queen
Mr. E T Wheadon, President of the Growers Assoc.
Princess Mary
Mr. A. N Bichard

This was the last and said to be an impromptu visit of the day by the Royals. King George had wanted to see how the Corbet’s, who at the time were the second largest growers on the island, and also who supplied melons, etc. directly to Buckingham Palace, worked their operations. Albeit it was “Herman Vineries” that was owned by William Corbet (Melon King) and his elder brothers John Henry Corbet and Alfred John Corbet who were owners of the Fruit Export Company. So they went to the largest vineries being “La Lande” or to the brother-in-law’s business!
