Vale Mill Guernsey
Vale Mill Guernsey

This photograph taken by Samuel Angel depicting the Vale Mill in the 1880/90s and shows the working mill without any restoration of the scanned print. It is believed the Mill ceased working in 1914.

The photograph like many of a similar age has faded over time (especially in the highlights). There has also been sulphide damage from the backing board plus improper washing of the print. Insect droppings are also deposited which can be seen on high magnification.

The restored images can be seen in the photos following - The original print has not been altered and is now safely stored. There is of course a chance there could be further degradation over time as the photograph cannot be removed from the amount without irreparable damage.

The Photographer, Samuel Angel is a local man, and appears on the 1861 Census as being born in 1861 at No15 Pollet Street St Peter Port and appears as 'Angell', all subsequent Census details he has 'Angel' with a single 'L.' .

The first time Samuel is listed as a photographer in the Census is in 1881, before that he was shown as a Draper's Shopman. He is still listed as a photographer in the 1911 Census.
