The Brig Delphine of France in trouble at Havelet on 29th Dec1897
The Brig Delphine of France in trouble at Havelet on 29th Dec1897

This French Brig was carrying 200 tons of coal from Cardiff to Paimpol in France. during a storm on the 28th December 1897 her main mast broke and sheltered that night in Havelet Bay.

The next morning, though the winds had had eased, there was trouble with one of the anchors so the lifeboat 'Vincent Kirk Ella' passed a line to the tug 'Alert' which then towed the brig to the harbour without mishap.

Further reading on the rescue can be found on page 22 & 23 of 'MAYDAY MAYDAY ( A History of the Guernsey Lifeboat Station 1803 - 1982) by Guy Machon.
