Harbour scene after 1879 salt-print
Harbour scene after 1879 salt-print

This photograph looks older than it is as it is a salt print made on inferior wood pulp paper. The image can be dated to post 1879 as the Lower Vegetable Market has been built.

The salt print process was the original method of printing paper negatives by Fox Talbot. This process though pleasing and artistic to see had the actual photographic image embedded in the paper fibres, which created less visual detail for the observer. It is unusual to see this old method being used at this late date, as the clearer albumen prints had been in use for many years. It is more than likely done by an amateur than a professional.

There is still clarity in the image, so it was more than likely printed from a collodion negative and not paper.
