These houses were demolished in 1874 to make way for the Lower Vegetable Market-completed in 1879.

The writing on the third building from the left says 'N. LIHOU'S TEMPERANCE TEA & COFFEE HOUSE' and was situated at 3. Church Street .

This establishment was run by Nicholas Lihou who's name appears on the 1871 census as living at this address and he is listed as a Coffee-house Keeper. His age is given as 69. He was born in Alderney.

Nicholas was married to Elizabeth and was born in 1806 in the Vale and was 65 in 1871.

Their granddaughter Elizabeth was with them in 1871 aged 3.
Also living with them, as a lodger in 1871 is Rachel Lihou aged 74, Charwoman; this is possibly Nicolas' sister-in-law, (nee Quevatre). She was born in Alderney.

Also living on the premises is locally born Anne Dark (or Dank), who is listed as being unmarried, aged 15 and a General servant (domestic).

The old buildings were knocked down in 1874 to make way for the new Lower Market buildings.

Nicholas is listed in the 1881 census as living at 2 Quay Street. His trade is listed as 'Coffee man Hawker'. Also living with him is his wife, Elizabeth, his son Richard plus his wife also called Elizabeth (Jersey born).
