Washing Place at Pont Renier in the late1850's or early 1860's
Washing Place at Pont Renier in the late1850's or early 1860's

This is a very rare early 150+ year old image (circa late1850's or early 1860's) of women washing clothes at the lavoir at Pont Renier Ruette Braye (bottom of Prince Albert's Road by Elizabeth House).
The lavoir is still there, but it looks completely different now.

Samuel Poulton (who advertised he was under patronage of HM the Queen), also marketed multi view carte de visite's of British towns. It is due to the author having a Multiview of Guernsey with the above same image showing Pont Renier, that it can be stated with certainty that this image is by him.

Ref: Part of Stereoview

Location: St Peter Port .Guernsey

Photographer: Poulton 352 Strand WC
